On Saturday, Feb 19, 2011, NGC received a call from Baosteel Engineering Equipment Department, the fact was due to the broken teeth of the imported gearbox, the hot rolling finishing line 2050, which had been put into use over one month ago, had to stop. To reduce the loss to the minimum, Baosteel hoped NGC can rush to repair the gearbox immediately.
In the afternoon of Feb 21, the 17-roller gearbox was delivered to NGC, Doctor Chen Zhanfu, and Engineer Wang Guanghuan from Baosteel hot rolling factory and Dcotor Xiong Jie from Baosteel Equipment Department also came to NGC to discuss the solution together with NGC engineers.
In the morning of Feb 22, the drawing was sent to NGC by Engineer Yangzheng (Baosteel) and foreign experts. NGC placed the order for the forging immediately and started up the emergency measurement to guarantee that the forgings can be delivered in the shortest time. Due to the missing of information, the disassembly of this gearbox was very difficult; NGC had made lots of tools and applied lots of solutions to take the 8 gears out of the gearbox finally.
On Feb 25, 6 pieces of forgings were arrived at NGC. Even though the production schedule was already full, NGC still arranged 6 lathes and 3 hobbing machines for the machining.
On the same day, Mr. Tan Aiguo, the Vice General Manager, Bai Zhen, the Director, and Yuan Wenqing, the Vice Director of Baosteel came to NGC to express their satisfaction for what NGC had done for their project.
On Feb 28, 6 gears were sent for carburization. The heat treatment was finished on March 8. After the detection, the finish turning, grinding, and inner spline and taper bore were done. All components were finished on March 14.
March 14, the foreign gear expert came to NGC, after the inspection of the gear machined by NGC, he thought NGC was not competent to assemble the gearbox, and suggested to assemble the gearbox abroad. However, with the understanding and trust to NGC, Baosteel experts decided to assemble it by NGC.
At 6:00pm March 19, the gearbox was running in test that very night, during the process, the foreign expert checked the noise, vibration, temperature rise and other items very carefully with his own tools, after 2 hours running, he gave a thumbs-up and said OK to NGC engineers. “I am very satisfied, and I never think that you are so good.”
On March 20, NGC cleaned the gearbox and mounted the accessories under Baosteel’s request, and delivered the gearbox to Baosteel before noon.
Under the co-work of NGC production and technical departments, the repairing job of the gearbox was finished one day earlier than the time Baosteel requested, which won NGC honor from Baosteel.
